At the end of November, another group of pilots visiting from Sweden joined us for some daytime adventuring at Tower Hill and evening fun at Native Place.  This was the tenth annual trip organized by Peter Dyrssen who is the tour leader and a very able instructor who regularly shares the joys of paragliding in India with his students.

Being a sociable creature, I spent a lot of time with them, flying and otherwise, and decided to inquire why exactly pilots would leave their lovely winter wonderland to fly in the sweltering heat of India.  What is it that attracts the Viking crowd to traverse across 8 time zones?  Is it the flying?  Is it the fun of eating their way across Kamshet?  Or perhaps it is the Saturday night rooftop tandoor at Native Place?

After all the fun flying in Kamshet, while sitting on the rooftop, I decided to ask. Here are some of their answers:

Did you guys enjoy your visit, and why?

The answer was quick ad energetic:  “Completely!  The company, the people, the place.  Enjoyed the simplicity, closeness to nature…  Winding down on the rooftop.”

“What did you think about the flying?”

One of the Swedes had a short answer: “Five out of five!”

“What do you mean by that?”

“Well, we were parawaiting a lot, but it was also enjoyable, so there is 5 out of 5 for that, too!  The convenience of the location, no particular strain hiking to the takeoff (unlike other places around the world), and the conditions were, on average, quite enjoyable.

The last day was a particular treat as we all squeezed in several hours of smooth flying, before heading back and getting ready to depart for the airport.”

“What did you think about the local folk?”

“Very friendly!   Kids threw the occasional requests for rupees, but everyone did it with a smile, and everyone seemed to be very keen on helping.  The boys packing and carrying gliders, the random villagers coming by the takeoff and landing areas, everyone seemed to be very welcoming and pleasant.”

The Swedes spent several days in Kamshet, and then ventured out to Panchgani which was a bit of a change in a 4 star hotel, but after flying there, returning to Native Place felt like they could relax a bit more, because, while it is not a 4 star hotel, it definitely is a nice place to wind down, sit around with friends, relax, and talk about gliding, or life,  or everything.

Several of the Swedes had already been here before, but they made it quite clear that they would return.  Who can blame them?  🙂
